2012 is proving to be quite a delightful year. I'm about to start my third year teaching at the AAU and wrapping up my book "Let's Go Hugo". It took awhile to get the right look, but under the guidance of my amazing art director and editor... it's there! I'll be delivering the artwork in person in New York, and excited about all the upcoming adventures. In other news, I have two new studio mates. I'll be sad to see Kellie Menendez and Angela Willetts go, but Jen Oaks and Sara Palacios will be wonderful additions to the space.

Lastly, I would like congratulate Helga Theodors at Soup Design. She designed a collaborative calendar I did with a few friends in 2011, and it was runner up in the Creative Quarterly 26! More exciting news to post soon.....but I have to get my hands on a football first.

It's almost the end of the semester at the Academy of Art, and it's been another great semester teaching. The students continue to amaze me. Now, it's time for some serious children's book work. First, are a few sketches from a e-textbook I'm working on about a family visiting Washington DC (McGraw Hill). I've also included a few more studies of Santiago. It's entitled "Let's Go Hugo!" and will be published by Dial (Penguin) in Spring of 2013. It's the first book I've written/illustrated.

I'm overjoyed to be working with the amazing people over there, and can't wait to get started. I'll post pictures of the book in progress.

Today's the last day of the traditional illustration technique class at California State University. All semester I've been impressed with the quality of the student's work, and charmed by their motivation to learn. While I wish I could share all of the final projects, here are two outstanding examples from my students (Elan Mertens and Audrey Gerodias). For their final, the students had to write a paper and illustrate a cultural event poster of their choice. Both used acrylic and gouache (although they could have selected any medium I taught them) and both also hand lettered the text. They are rockstars!

I just came back from a wonderful trip to New York. I met with amazing art directors/editors at Simon & Schuster, Dial, Dutton, Greenwillow/Harper, New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Hyperion, Harcourt/Clarion, and Henry Holt.

While there I was able to reconnect with a few friends, finally met Jeanne Betancourt (author of Ava Tree and Pony Pals) at her gorgeous place, and saw great artwork. In addition, I had the privilege of speaking to one of Bil Donovan's classes at Fashion Institute (FIT).

In other news, I'm a few weeks away from wrapping up the lullaby book with Tricycle Press and about to finally start illustrating the first book I've ever written, Maria Had A LIttle Llama (Henry Holt 2012).

Lastly, two of my amazing students from AAU are doing extremely well. Ye Won Lee, won second place in the Portfolio Competition at the SCBWI LA conference and Sara Palacios just got a book deal with Children's Book Press. I couldn't be prouder.

The fall semester has just begun and it's off to a great start. I'm teaching a great group of students at California State University, and can't wait to meet my students at the Academy of Art University.

In related news, I'm going to be in New York from September 12-16 to meet with a publishers, editorial clients, be inspired, and have some fun. Wish me Luck!

This is proving to be a quite a busy summer for myself. In a few weeks, I'll be attending ICON6 Illustration conference for the first time. I can't wait to be inspired by all the amazing speakers and attendees. I'm also excited to be participating in the Roadshow.

Currently, I'm working on the Illustrations for the Lullaby book, teaching/writing an online class, taking a creative writing class, and few other illustration things. It's a bit much, but I'm really enjoying all of it so far.

Color Study

What makes a good picture book? In January of this year, I began teaching a graduate children's book class at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where I had just two years earlier been an MFA student myself. As I created lectures for my very first class, I was forced to try to understand exactly what I believe makes a picture book successful. Two years out of school I was proud to be embarking on my sixth picture book. While there is a laundry list of technical terms that came to mind, I realized that the core of a good picture book is simply INSPIRATION. I believe it enables an illustrator to develop a world full of dynamic characters. With my most recent published book, Let Me Help! (Children's Book Press), I had three major inspirations.
My first was Alma Flor Ada's wonderful story. After reading the manuscript for Let Me Help!, I set out to do Alma Flor's uplifting tale justice. Let Me Help! is about a parrot named Perico who wants to help his family prepare for Cinco de Mayo. Despite repeatedly being shooed away, Perico manages to save the day in a very big way. Through the course of the book, Perico shows us to be accepting of others, and to be true to ourselves–two of the most important lessons a child can learn.
From there, my second inspiration for Let Me Help! came from renown artist, Diego Rivera. His ability to convey a variety of faces and body types, but make it read as one united group was a quality I really aspired to portray in the book. As a person of Mexican descent, it was really important to me to depict each character as an individual part of one large family.
The last major inspiration came to me while I was observing parrots at the zoo. Seeing the parrots side-shuffle across the branch and say hello at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, it became incredibly easy for me to picture them dancing and singing as well. I began to wonder what Perico would dance to, and by the end of the day "Fantasy" by Earth, Wind, and Fire became Perico's theme song. Playing the song, helped motivate me to come back to the drafting table to draw my charming winged protagonist.
Inspiration can come from anywhere if your eyes are open to it. It's simply about looking at the world around you for ideas and allowing yourself to be creative. The more inspiration, the more wonderful details emerge. In the words of renowned illustrator and educator Andrew Loomis, "The creativeness is in the planning, pure and simple, and the rest is good carpenter work."

Happy Spring!

I just came back from a fun trip to Lake Tahoe. While there, I did a presentation at South Lake Tahoe Community College. Thank you to Kristin Boles for the opportunity to share my work and experiences to the students at the college.

Lastly, I am participating again in the Once Upon a Time Show over at the Museum of Children's Book Art. Can't wait to see all the wonderful artwork. The opening is this Saturday from 2-4pm. I'm happy to announce that my first picture Book will be going on sale soon. It's official publication date is in May, but in the upcoming weeks, Let Me Help! will be on sale through the Children's Book Press website.

Just a few updates:

Ava Tree and The Wishes Three goes on sale next Tuesday! I just got my advanced copy today, and they did a great job at Feiwel and Friends putting it together.
I've done a few presentations about the book, and I'll be doing another next Tuesday. I also have a few book signings lined up, and I will post more information closer to the date.
I also thought I'd include a few recent illustrations. I'm working on my pictures books right now and another magazine cover for Civitas. Looks like it is going to be a very busy spring indeed.

I'm happy to report that...I'm currently working on two picture books for next year! I'm grateful and excited to be busy. In addition, I'm wrapping up a few mailers for the Holiday Season. Here is a little sneak peek at my mailer and few of the illustrations I did for Heeb Magazine (on newstands now).

College of Charleston Illustration

This image will be accompanying a very sweet Point of View article in the Fall 2008 College of Charleston Magazine.
On a side note, I'm waiting to hear back on a few secretive assignments and I'm going to be giving a small presentation at the Academy of Art. One of my favorite teachers, Sandra Spiedel, has asked me to come in explain my process and how to navigate the Illustration World as a Newbie. Should be fun!

In other illustration news, I have 5 spots appearing in HEEB Magazine next month and a magazine cover for Civitas Review. I'll post those as soon as I can. Lastly, I'm attending the SCBWI conference in San Francisco Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing dear friends and making new contacts.

I've been very busy lately. I"m on the final stages for my first children's book (young reader), and have another illustration for LAteen Magazine. In addition, I've been asked to contribute to online Magazine from Spain (that one makes my Spanish Speaking family very proud).

Spring Show Portfolio Review

Even though I graduated back in December, I was honored by the AAU and asked to attend the Spring Show Portfolio Review. I was able to meet with Irene Gallo, Tim Mendola, and Richard Solomon(for the second time). I was humbled by fellow alumni, and appreciated the great advice by every one. Needless to say, much work to be done and I'll be really focusing on refining my work.
On a side note, going to New York in two weeks and half to show my portfolio around. I have a few appointments scheduled already. Wish me luck.
* Started up doing portraits again.

Richmond Illustrators Club

I'm delighted to say, two of my pieces got into Richmond Illustrators Show. The following pieces will be hanging in the Ghost Print Gallery in Richmond, VA. The judges this year were Anita Kunz, Greg Swearingen and Josh George. It's a real honor.I wish I could go and see all my amazing Illustration Academy Alumni.
